Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in Texas feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 3.01 million head on Dec. 1, up 4 percent from a year ago.
According to the monthly report released by the Texas Field Office, the estimate was up slightly from the Nov. 1 level. Producers placed 510,000 head in commercial feedlots during November, up 17 percent from a year ago but down 27 percent from last month. Texas commercial feeders marketed 490,000 head during November, down 2 percent from last year and down 8 percent from last month.
On Dec. 1, there were 2.57 million head of cattle and calves on feed in the Northern High Plains, 85 percent of the state's total. The number on feed across the area was up 6 percent from last year and down slightly from the November total.
November placements in the Northern High Plains totaled 434,000 head, down 27 percent from the October total. Marketings were down 6 percent from last month to 426,000 head. Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States in feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 12.1 million head on Dec.1, 2007. This inventory was 1 percent above Dec.1, 2006.
Placements in feedlots during November totaled 2.12 million head, 12 percent above November 2006. November placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds totaled 685,000 head; 600-699 pounds totaled 650,000 head; 700-799 pounds totaled 420,000 head; 800 pounds and greater totaled 361,000 head. Marketings of fed cattle during November totaled 1.74 million head, 3 percent below 2006.
